Great is His Faithfulness

I have always loved hymns, partially because I was raised in a traditional church that sang them every Sunday, but also because many hymns are written in a poetic style that bares the soul of the author. There are several hymns that remind me of the Psalms in that you can read the lyrics and see a personal struggle or enlightenment. Also similar to the Psalms, hymns have managed to endure the test of time in that they are still applicable to many situations today. For 2018, I have chosen the hymn “Great is Thy Faithfulness.”

“Great is Thy faithfulness,” O God my Father,
There is no shadow of turning with Thee;
Thou changest not, Thy compassions, they fail not
As Thou hast been Thou forever wilt be.”

“Great is Thy faithfulness!” “Great is Thy faithfulness!”
 Morning by morning new mercies I see;
All I have needed Thy hand hath provided—
“Great is Thy faithfulness,” Lord, unto me!

Summer and winter, and springtime and harvest,
Sun, moon and stars in their courses above,
Join with all nature in manifold witness
To Thy great faithfulness, mercy and love.

Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth,
Thine own dear presence to cheer and to guide;
Strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow,
Blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside!”

These lyrics have resonated deeply with me, because of the description of God that lies within them. For every fear and doubt that I have had this year, this song provided a reminder of the nature of our Heavenly Father. In the midst of all of the changes of the year, finding out we’re having a baby, discovering I had a mass, going through surgery, taking on heftier leadership roles in the ministry, and being stretched in ways that we did not expect for quite some time, this song reminded that God does not change and his compassions do not fail. Every difficult day that we have had this year has always been accompanied by new mercies and God’s hand of provision. This year, we were able to join in with nature to be witness to God’s great faithfulness, mercy, and love. God himself with his strength and his hope guided us through the year to do his work.

2018 was a very good year as we were able to take what we had learned from 2017 and apply it to all of the new challenges we faced this year, which aided substantially in our growth and helped us to be more confident in our work. But more than anything, 2018 was a good year because of God’s great faithfulness and his overflowing blessings!

The best blessing being the gift of our new, precious daughter: Lily Grace Mooney, born December 1, 2018.

Thank you to each and every one of you for your encouragement, prayers, thoughts, hugs, advice, love, and support. We appreciate you more than we can express in words! We hope that as you look back on 2018 you remember God’s great faithfulness.

Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

            Love,

               Ben, Emily, and Lily Mooney
